Remembrance Day Service

This coming Sunday is Remembrance Day, particularly special this year as it is 100 years since the end of the First World War.  The service will take place at Holcombe Burnell Parish Church at 10.50 am on the 11th November and will begin and end with a military piper.

Candles will be lit for the fourteen villagers who gave their lives, whilst their names are read to the congregation. A wreath will be laid with the candles on behalf of the village by the Parish Council. This is also an opportunity to remember all those who have given their lives in war both then and since and recognise the sacrifice they made for their country. Everyone is welcome.

Included in the list of those for whom candles will be lit are some particularly poignant stories. Henry and Anne Bromett lost three sons, Henry, Reginald and Archibald. Christy and Virginia Sargeant lost two sons, Christy and Ralph. Second Lieutenant Paul Francis William Studholme of Perridge House was killed taking part in the first and only cavalry charge of the Great War on October 1917. He was only 19 years of age.

A talk by Tony Lethbridge follows in the afternoon at the Village Hall.  If you have any memories or stories of relatives from the village who served either World War that you would like to share do please share them. These could be pictures and letters from or about the servicemen and women themselves.  It would be equally interesting to hear about the lives of those left behind and how people coped, particularly in this rural area where farms needed to feed the whole nation. The Land Girls must have been particularly important.
